Do I wear a suit or a casual, approachable fit? Will you see my shoes? What about colors?
Fret not you anxious you, here is my 3-step guide to deciding what to wear for your brand shoot. Being in front of the camera is hard enough, let's not overthink before it even begins!
Step 1 - Start With Your Brand
Before we even LOOK at that closet, let's think through your brand first. What feeling do you want to give off? Is your brand more professional or creative? If your vibe is more professional, reach for that business casual look that makes you feel good. If it's more creative, I'd recommend playing a fun playlist and letting your creativity run wild. There's no rules.
What colors and textures are consistent with your brand identity? Remember placements for these photos. If they're going on your website or by your products, remember to chose colors and textures that complement that look. If your brand is modern and minimal, think solid colors and clean lines. If it's earthy and warm, reach for warm tones and relaxed fabrics. Bold and vibrant = bold and vibrant, I assume you're pickin up what I'm puttin down by now.
Step 2 - Tips for What Works With the Camera
DO:
Wear solid colors
Choose fitted or structured pieces (over loose and baggy ones)
Bring 2-3 options for variety
Layer (blazers, jackets, scarves, give depth and options)
Accessorize (but remember Step 1)
Coordinate, don't match if there's multiple of you
DON'T:
Wear distracting patterns (tiny striped, busy florals)
Wear Logos or brand names
Wear wrinkly clothes
Wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. Comfort is key!
Step 3 - Dress for Where the Photos Will Live
Will these photos go on your website, Instagram, LinkedIn, or all of the above?
Make sure your outfit choices align with the platforms and audiences you’re targeting.
